Lady Styling

May 25th

14:30-16:00

Tanzraum Wedding

Lady Styling can mean two things.

It can encompass what might traditionally be described as “feminine” Styling - soft, smooth, sexy- expressed by anyone, either men, women, or non-binary individuals.

It can also refer to the way a woman expresses herself while dancing, whether perceived as “feminine,” “masculine,” or anything in between.

In these two workshops, we will focus on the styling Helen incorporates when she dances Cuban salsa.

In the Basic Body Movement Workshop, we’ll practice hip and upper-body movements. These foundational exercises will help you move smoothly in different ways, allowing you to focus on arm movements and other expressive details later on.

In the second workshop, Footwork and Solo Moves, we’ll explore diverse footwork, turns, and functional styling with an emphasis on arm movements and different hip movements.

Price

One Workshop - 20€

You can also use one class of your 4 or 10 class ticket.

Rumba Columbia

Rumba Columbia is a very strong and sensitive dance

Through Columbia dancers express their deepest emotions. It is an improvisational dance developed by the people of cuba where every dancer performs alone showing everything that he or she can do. It consists of fast footwork combined with hard movement of the shoulders, varying with tempo and cadence.

We will not only show you a choreography to replicate, we will teach you some basic steps and transitions, in order for you to understand the dynamic of Columbia. Our goal is that you can feel confident to improvise alone.

In this workshop, we will explore the different instruments that make up the sound of salsa music. From the steady rhythm of the congas to the crisp sound of the cowbell, the melodic patterns of the piano to the driving lines of the bass—we’ll listen, break down, and move with intention. For each instrument, we will learn specific dance movements or dynamics that reflect its unique character and role in the music. This is not about learning a fixed choreography, but about developing a deeper understanding of how to feel and interpret the music through your body. By the end of the session, you’ll be more confident dancing with the music—not just to it.

Weekend Workshop

July 5th & July 6th

Location: to be announced

Son Cubano
The Origin of Cuban Salsa

“Son” is a word in the Spanish language that means “sound” or “tone,” but in Cuba, Son is known as a musical and danceable genre. The genre was popularized in Havana in 1909 by a group from the eastern regions of Cuba, though it may have existed as early as the 16th century. However, Son is not an outdated or extinct genre—on the contrary, it is (once again) being performed by many Cuban bands today and was also the foundation of the genre we now refer to as “Salsa.” A very well-known example of this music is the song “Chan Chan” by the Buena Vista Social Club.

The dance performed to Son music is a very elegant, “polite” partner dance that is based on a strong connection between the dancers.

In this course, participants will learn not only the steps and figures of Son, but especially how to interpret the music. Son is danced a contra tiempo (offbeat). We will practice this by singing instrumental lines and doing rhythm exercises.

An important element is the teaching of style and posture—i.e., elegance and the associated stylistic elements such as saludos (greetings) and the interaction between dance partners. In all our partner dance courses, we place great emphasis on leading and following. Therefore, a significant part of the instruction will be dedicated to this. We will explore how to build a comfortable dance frame, how to signal certain figures with the body, and how to understand the signals from one’s partner.

Requirements: Basic knowledge of Cuban Salsa
